Stereotaxic Mountable Drill

Stereotaxic mountable drill  mounts on any common stereotaxic instrument for reproducible position and depth of hole.  Requires our drill probe holder.

Stereotaxic Mountable Drill, designed for use on patients or dental implants in the lab, has a wider speed range (1,000-35,000 RPM) than most handpiece drills (common minimum about 5000 RPM). The low end is good for rodent surgery. Slower speed minimizes target heating and splatter of cut debris. The precision dental use motor has very low vibration or runout, which is minimized even more by slower speeds. The handpiece is made  made for a holder.  It fits to the 3695 Handpiece Adaptor made by Neuroscience Tools for a very rigid straight hold. Made to fit this stereotaxic mountable drill.

Mounting on our Angle Three™ Stereotaxic Instrument allows reading the depth to a resolution of 3 microns. Learn the exact right depth, and apply it to every animal in the group. Stop drilling too deep and gouging a divot in brain tissue, or not deep enough and breaking the probe on bone ledges.
The chassis is mostly vertical, narrow (2.54 in.), takes up very little countertop, which is always at a premium in research surgical labs. The hand piece cord is 1.2 m.
If you are using a dual manipulator Angle Three™, and have aligned your probe to animal and manipulator tilts with a first manipulator, set the second manipulator holding the drill to the same angle, the same target, and touch Bregma. The software has the head orientation from the first manipulator. The display will give directions to the target, move the DV at the end to just touch the bone. Don’t bother to back off and make a mark, just turn on the handpiece at a slow rotation and advance the known skull depth, measured from the digital display.  You will achieve precise and reproducible placement and depth of hole.

Choice of Foot or knob speed control. Foot pedal is included.  Support stand for drill handpiece is included.  No drill bits included.  Select standard straight dental bits.
